Spring 2011 MINI GRANT- AWARDS
Believe To Succeed
A bulletin board will be developed at BES that highlights and gives information about successful people with disabilities. This will serve to provide role models for students with disabilities and teach all students that they can succeed no matter what challenges they face.
Kindles for Kids
Kindles will be purchased for use by Grade 4 students at BES. This will allow studnets to utilize the growing technology of electronic books within the classroom. Students will meet with their small reading groups and use the technology to expand upon their reading experience.
iPads and Speech Therapy
The Speech and Language Therapy Department at BES will utilize iPads purchased to enable the use of new speech applications. These application will excite and motivate students, enable teachers to customize lessons to each student and allow these lessons to take place anywhere.
Survivors Speak
All BMS students will read a book, Hana's Suitcase, and participate in a program called Survivors Speak. Two speakers who survived the Holocaust, or were a part of the liberators, will talk to BMS students and then answer questions. This program will enable BMS studentes to gain a better understanding of WWII and the effects of the Holocaust.
Composition and Inspiration in the Classroom: The Music of Larry Neeck
Students participating in the BMS Concert and Jazz bands will have a musical composition commissioned for them by composer Larry Neeck. Mr. Neeck will compose a piece specifically for BMS students and their skills. Mr. Neeck will then provide an artist-in-residency component where he will work with BMS students, conducting them and teaching them about the methods and methodology of composition. BMS band students will then provide the world premier performance of the piece.
Bernards High Robotics
This grant will support the formation of a Robotics team at BHS. The team will allow students the opportunity to solve real-world problems hosted by FIRST Robotics. FIRST Robotics is a global organization promoting education and competition in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
